Three Crossroads Correctional Center staff members were assaulted by inmates of the prison around 1:45 p.m. on July 30, according to a statement from CoreCivic — operator of the Shelby prison.
The news of the assaults was first reported by the Helena Independent Record.
According to the statement, the three employees were transported to an outside hospital to treat injuries sustained during the incident and have since been released.
The alleged attackers have also been identified, according to the release.
When the incident broke out, “other facility staff members immediately responded to this incident and were able to quickly quell the assault and restore order,” according to the statement.
The incident is under investigation by the Montana Department of Corrections. But according to the statement, it appears it is not related to the water shortage that was simultaneously impacting the facility and the surrounding Shelby community.
Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect that the investigation into the connection between the attacks and the simultaneous water shortage is ongoing.
